Oh Say, Can You See?

26 Aug

I can see you
13 rivers red blood brothers
13 pillars victorious mothers

blue promises in the night sky
your stars shining as they guide

give me liberty, give me life
bless the fruit of our strife

o majesty, wave your banner over us
bless our battles in the dust

your colors dipped in God we trust
I can see you, I will be you
wave, wave, wave

i don’t think i get the 13 rivers and pillars reference here as my knowledge of the american history is not deep enough – i hear you on what you say about freedom – becomes more and more meaning with what happens in the world right now

the 13 rivers are the red stripes, and the 13 pillars are the white stripes, which in the flag stand for the original 13 colonies of the United states.

Great opening lines . I love the symbolism you give eAch element of the flag. The end is sharp too. I will be you. Maybe we can live up to our anthems.

Incredible poem–too bad you posted a bit late, or it would have had 25+ more raves. I like the way you boldly rhyme just off kilter, but bang on. Very interesting take–the ensign not the lyrics of the anthem as most of us did. I love the lines /o majesty, wave your banner over us/our battles in the dust/.

I like your type of patriotism – be the flag. What a lovely anthem you’ve written.

Oh this is stunning, Lupita–gave me chills. And it also made me think of the 13 clan mothers in the tradition of the Southwest American Indians–interesting how that all merges.

I too like the imagery you have paired with the flag’s stripes and colors. I hope we can help our country be its best, as you have described here.
